Why choose this subject?  

Religious Education is concerned with the deep meaning that individuals and groups make of their experiences and how this helps them give purpose to their lives. It provides opportunities to explore, make and respond to the meanings of those experiences in relation to the beliefs and experiences of others as well as to one’s own experiences. Religious Education allows students to gain a diverse insight into society and allows them to understand that people believe in different things.  

RE’s place in the curriculum is underpinned by values and purposes. Along with the other subjects of the curriculum, RE aims: 

• to provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve; 

• to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and to prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the present and the future. 

In addition, RE allows students to develop their critical thinking skills as key philosophical questions are examined such as ‘Does God exist’?

Key concepts of Religious education  

There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of RE. Pupils need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

1.4 Identity, diversity and belonging 

1.5 Meaning, purpose and truth 

1.6 Values and commitments 

All of these key skills will be underpinned by one of the world’s major religions. This will enable students to examine how key questions and debates fit into the teachings of religious text. 

What your child will gain from this subject 

• Religious Education is an essential component of a broad and balanced education and is a focal point in the curriculum for work on Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and British Values. It enables the growth of religious literacy, essential for life in modern Britain and the wider world. It further allows students to develop their understanding of the world so they can be positive citizens in the future. Moreover, students will learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ. 

LOTC 

 RE at Cloughwood Academy tries to incorporate as much Learning Outside the Classroom as we can whilst still fulfilling the requirements of the curriculum.  

Some examples include: -  

• Visits to local Buddhist temples 

• Visits to local Churches 

• Visits to Mosques 

    The RE department is always looking for new and imaginative ways to engage students in RE outside of the classroom.
